I found a new game, and I want to share it with you.
Over the past several months I have been gathering with a small intimate group of people to participate in a insightful practice that has changed the way I reflect and relate to others. I was introduced to the practice by Diana Prince (@AuthenticDiana) and have since been privately convening with her about how to expand this beautiful practices influence. I’m so excited to be bringing this modality to X, and I’d like to give you a comprehensive overview of what I’ll be bringing to the platform.
T Group stands for Training group and it is a relational awareness practice that helps you learn about yourself and others through interaction. Founded by Kurt Lewin in 1947 there are countless iterations and off groups of this learning modality. Some people see it as a game, and others more of a mediation.
It’s a practice that limits our options of communication and forces us to get creative in how we relate and express in ways that serve honesty, intimacy, and connection.
・・・・・・・・・・・・・・
T Group focuses on the expression of mostly these 3 present experiences:
Emotions - Emotions are physiological and emotional responses that help people react to events or situations.
Physical Experiences - These are what are actively happening in the body. Shoulders dropping, warmth in the chest, or even sweaty palms. These make up the physiological portion of your present emotions.
Assumptions/Stories - Stories in this container are personal narratives and assumptions about events, experiences, or ideas. These could be true or fictional.

While there are no official T Group Scripts there are a few sentence stems we use in format:
The first involve revealing our present experience such as:
I notice… I feel sad.
I feel… warmth after that last share.
The second is sharing the impact of others behavior/statements/narratives or even expressions:
Hearing that I feel… sad and happy at the same time.
I noticed… that you smiled and the impact on me is that I feel more relaxed.
Third, we own our assumptions:
I have a story that… you’re nervous about sharing.
I’m imagining that… what you shared must be frustrating for you.
Lastly we name our desires:
I’m desiring… more slowness in the group.
I want… go to the bathroom but I’m enjoying this experience.
(Note that these are about actions, impulses and experiences, not what you want to say.)

4 Movements (Adapted For Twitter Spaces)
We use 4 hand movements in T Group.
Headline (👏)
You actually say Headline then give brief context, not a paragraph. Be mindful not to get lost in the story of what you’re saying.
Twinkle Fingers (💯)
This expresses resonance with another’s share. Essentially a 'me too.'
Open Palm (👋)
This is an invitation to reveal more about your motivation for sharing or question the feeling underneath the share.
Bring it to a point (✊)
This asks you to bring your share into a tighter format. We have a tendency to lose ourselves in the story. Essentially, what is the essence of what you want me to understand?
・・・・・・・・・・・・・・
T Group is…
About the present moment.
About your emotions, physical experiences, and narratives.
About naming your impulse/behavioral pattern without doing it.
Highly relational.
T Group is NOT…
About the past or future.
About storytelling or the narrative.
A place to give advice, analyze, fix, or attempt to change anyone’s experience.
A place to ask direct questions.
・・・・・・・・・・・・・・
Here are some tips for beginners:
Start your share with your present emotion (excitement, nervous, anxious, fear, joy).
When in doubt, come back to the body. What physical experiences do we have?
If you’re feeling scared to share, consider saying “I’m feeling scared to share.”
If you notice you’re distracted, consider saying “I notice I am distracted.”
T-group is one of the best places to experience/explore discomfort and conflict and try on new behaviors.
