Lately it feels like I can’t get myself to care about much of anything but mostly, I can’t get myself to give a rats ass about marketing. Social media is a hungry, ravenous machine and it is never satisfied. You can spend hours scripting a message, planning the visuals, and recording without slipping up until you’ve got something you’re proud of. 90 seconds of pure gold. And the algorithm will chew it up, and spit it out god knows where, for reasons god knows why, if it even spits it out at all.
Your post for the female gaze is met with hordes of horny men. Your exasperation about a microaggression at work reaches a roving band of racists. Your teens graduation photos are pushed to predators in their prime. Your art is met with utter silence
The algorithm thrives on outrage. A take that’s a little too hot and a lot too hasty goes viral. The internet is in flames and and the psyop that is performative outrage continues. I can’t make heads or tails of social media right now and honestly, I don’t think I want to. I’m tired of trying to break my ideas down into thoughtful little sound bites for an audience that’s just mindlessly consuming. I want a more intentional and interactive experience with my tribe.
Can we discuss the shadow? Yours and mine? Can we speak in an associative manner? Can we integrate the ugly, or maybe just stop pretending for one fucking moment that any of this is normal? Can we sit with the weird for a bit? I don’t know.
I see a lot of people just saying the same thing here on Substack. I’m seeing people put together thought provoking video essays that I’m happy to dive into for easily an hour or more. And I’ve been thinking to myself… I want that. I want an audience that isn’t just mindlessly consuming me. One that I don’t have to boil myself down for. One that’s interested in the toiling of my very dark, very weird, very unhinged mind.
I was gonna write more ‘What’s New This Month’ slop but I instead want to invite you into a living conversation in this medium, and others. I’m tryna be less on your feed, and more on your mind. Think more sends to your inbox, more blog posts, and Youtube videos/lives so we can spend more time together.
So tell me, what would you pick my brain about? What do you want to know? What topics can we dive into together? And are you down to hear from me bout once a week?
Let me know.
